Japan Work Visas: The Simple Labor Wall

2025年09月28日 17:57

To all foreign nationals who have obtained a work visa (Status of Residence) to work in Japan: Do you think, "If I have a work visa, I can do any job"?

That is actually not the case. Japanese work visas are strictly regulated based on the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Immigration Act), which defines the activities permitted for each Status of Residence. Engaging in work that goes beyond the scope of your permitted activities is considered illegal employment and can lead to visa cancellation or affect your future residency in Japan.

This article will explain examples of work you cannot do, focusing on the "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" visa, which is held by many foreign workers.

Why Are There Restrictions on Work Content with a Work Visa?

This visa category is a system designed to accept foreign talent who can utilize specialized knowledge or skills. Consequently, simple labor that does not require special knowledge or skills is generally not permitted.

Examples of Work Classified as "Simple Labor"

Under the "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" Status of Residence, the following types of work are generally not allowed as your main duties.

・Restaurant staff/kitchen helper
・Convenience store work
・Factory work
・Physical labor at construction sites
・Taxi or delivery driver

However, work in the same workplace is possible if the main duties are related to planning, management, or specialized activities. Examples include: restaurant manager, product development staff, or interpretation/translation work.

Be Cautious Even with Office Work!

It's often assumed that "office work is fine," but caution is required. While specialized tasks like accounting or human resources are acceptable, if your work primarily consists of miscellaneous duties such as making copies, simple data entry, or serving tea, it may be deemed simple labor.

If You Want to Work Outside Your Permitted Scope

You may work part-time for up to 28 hours per week. This is only allowed with an "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted" (資格外活動許可 - Shikakugai Katsudō Kyoka). The part-time work must not interfere with your primary activity (main job).

Summary

A work visa is not "permission to work freely in Japan"; it is permission to work in a specific occupation.

Simple labor is generally NG.

If you want to do part-time work, you must get the Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted.
