What Is a Student Visa?
「留学ビザ」は、日本国内の教育機関で勉強するために必要な在留資格の通称です。
厳密には、ビザ（査証）は在外公館（大使館や領事館）で発給されるもので、日本への入国を許可するための推薦状のようなもの。一方、在留資格は、日本に上陸後、法務大臣から与えられる日本に滞在して特定の活動を行うことができる資格を指します。一般的に、この在留資格を取得することを「ビザを取る」と呼ぶことが多いですが、当ページでも皆様に馴染みのある「留学ビザ」という言葉を総称として使用し、解説を進めていきます。
日本の教育機関で学ぶことを目的とする方のために用意されており、語学学校や大学、専門学校など、どの種類の学校で学ぶかによって、在留期間や申請条件が異なります。ご自身の目的に合ったビザを取得することが、日本での留学生活を成功させるための第一歩となります。
A "student visa" is the common name for the status of residence required to study at an educational institution in Japan.
Strictly speaking, a visa is a document issued by an overseas embassy or consulate, much like a letter of recommendation, that grants permission to enter Japan. In contrast, a status of residence is a qualification granted by the Minister of Justice upon your arrival in Japan, which allows you to stay and engage in specific activities.
While people often say "get a visa" when referring to obtaining this status of residence, we will use the more familiar term "student visa" for general purposes on this page.
This visa is for individuals who want to study at a Japanese educational institution. The period of stay and application requirements differ depending on the type of school you attend, such as a language school, university, or vocational school. Obtaining the right visa for your specific goal is the first step toward a successful student life in Japan.
